Abstract

Oral health is part of overall well-being; maintaining healthy teeth and gums is crucial for a healthy life. Promoting hygiene at an early age and making dental visits can ensure good oral health. This study assessed oral health knowledge among second-year high school students aged 16 to 18 at the Hippocrates University. A descriptive methodology with a quantitative approach was used, utilizing a questionnaire validated by 4 dental experts from the university. The questionnaire addressed five dimensions: demographic data (age and gender), frequency of dental visits, knowledge about foods affecting dental health, use of oral hygiene products, and general knowledge of oral health. 51% of the teenagers showed average knowledge, demonstrating a lack of awareness about proper oral hygiene care, while 26% demonstrated good knowledge, showing an understanding of dental care, reinforced by regular dental visits, and the remaining 23% exhibited poor knowledge, showing a lack of understanding in the improper use of oral hygiene products, especially concerning the benefits of fluoride. Given that overall learning levels are not as expected, it is crucial that the university intensify its efforts in oral health education, particularly focusing on improving understanding of the correct use of hygiene products and the importance of proper nutrition for dental health.
